Identifying impairments through comprehensive physical & psychosocial assessments and empowering people to restore function ideallythrough non-pharmacological, non-invasive treatment plans.
Using specialized testing equipment to assess the health of muscles and nerves. Typically consists of "needle Electromyography" and "Nerve Conduction Studies." Dr. Malhotra has taught nationally on the topic.
Diagnosis & assessment of various diseases affecting the nerves as they leave the spine (radiculopathy), collections of nerves (plexopathy), motor neurons (ALS), peripheral nerves (neuropathies), and muscles (myopathies).
17 years of developing programs and caring for veterans with mild Traumatic Brain Injuries. Dr. Malhotra is no longer taking new patients for this.
Gautam Malhotra’s approach to the initial encounter is to thoroughly download and unload the patient’s issues, critically listening for what matters to them. In this way he can serve as an advocate and helpful guide for them on their journey as they navigate their healthcare. After 17 years of training residents in an academic program, he values the hands-on physical exam and educating the patient about what is discovered, the current evidence from the clinical literature, and what he would recommend if you were his own family member. He rarely prescribes medications, sometimes uses injections, and almost always initiates treatment plans that involve physical or occupational therapy.
He has practiced at MAC Rehab (Overlook Medical Arts Center), Alpha Health in West Orange, New Jersey Pain Consultants, and currently at Altair Health in Morristown.
Dr. Malhotra is fortunate to have grown up in a household of physicians. Mahamaya Malhotra MD and Harish K. Malhotra MD started their psychiatric practices in NJ in the late 1970s and eventually established a reputation of excellence in Summit, NJ. (His brother Rahul Malhotra MD took over for Harish after his passing in 2016). As such, Gautam passionately endeavors to carry on the Malhotra legacy of comprehensive compassionate medical care for NJ residents.

The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) residency program is internationally recognized as one of the top training programs in the field of Physiatry. After graduating from it in 2005, Dr. Malhotra maintained this affiliation with NJMS to pursue his passion for teaching and continued learning. This included daily bedside resident/student clinical instruction, lecturing, board review courses, career mentoring/networking, publication (academic conference posters, journal submissions), development of instructional courses/materials/seminars/workshops, mock oral exams, and even hosting the annual departmental Holiday Party. (A full list of these is available here.) Bedside teaching included general outpatient and inpatient physiatric clinical skills (elements of the history and examination) in addition to specialized procedures ranging from chemodenervaiton for spasticity/migraines, electrodiagnosis, and soft tissue & joint injections. He has been invited to lecture at several other programs nationally. He was co-chair for the Clinical Competency Committee, Alumni Committee, and Curriculum committee where he was the Sub-committee lead for Electrodiagnostic medicine curriculum. He was the 2013-15 Volunteer Faculty Representative to the NJMS Faculty Council. This culminated in a promotion to Clinical Professor in 2021.
Despite moving to the community in 2022, he has maintained his relationship with the program, intermittently offering resources, mentoring, and teaching in coordination with the chairman. He still serves on the graduate medical education committee and as the Electrodiagnostic Medicine Training Program Liaison to the AANEM, whose role it is to modify and revise the model guidelines for electrodiagnostic medical training programs as needed as well as proctor/review Edx self-assessment exam.
From 2005-2022, Dr. Malhotra served as a full-time Attending Staff Physician for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PMRS) at the Veterans Administration of New Jersey Healthcare System (VANJHCS). PMRS in the VANJHCS provides inpatient and outpatient services for the NJ veteran population. Outpatient clinics include general PMR, prosthetics, electrodiagnosis, cardiac rehabilitation, ultrasound guided injection, and spasticity clinic. These clinics routinely involve the diagnosis and management of patients with conditions including musculoskeletal disorders, neuromuscular disease, amputation, rheumatologic conditions, and traumatic brain injury. Physician responsibilities in all of these clinics include direct delivery of the highest possible quality of care and oversight of resident physicians.
Since being hired, Dr. Malhotra worked closely with the PMRS Chief (Chae Im) on numerous administrative projects and committees at the local, regional, and national level to progress the department and field forward. A few of these include the domains of telerehabilitation, polytrauma/TBI, amputee/prosthetics, integrative medicine, interventional pain, business office and logistics. Dr. Malhotra initiated a complete overhaul of the PMRS services offered on the Lyons campus. He contributed to the writing of policies that were adopted locally and nationally. .Locally, he served on numerous committees including CARF accreditation, Whole Health/Integrative Medicine, Planetree Healing Environments, Polytrauma, Telehealth, Amputee System of Care, and was named director of strategic development. , He was an invited member to multiple national advisory committees, the National PMR Field Advisory Board, and Employee Engagement and Education/Focused Resources Committee of the Amputee System of Care.
Dr. Malhotra has been an active and outspoken member of the American Association of Neuromuscular Medicine (AANEM) since 2010. Besides the lifelong ties to other members, he has enjoyed serving as an invited member on several committees and presented a poster at the 2022 conference.
